Greetings, allies!
Y’all being the hip, with-it, woke types that you are (otherwise you wouldn’t be subbed to our newsletter!) you are probably well aware that June is Pride Month. We are so fortunate to have the members of Bastrop Pride in our midst. They kicked off Pride Month with a three day wingding last weekend. It was a pleasure to attend and participate in.
Friday night they held a drag show. If you were around this time last year, you may recall the ridiculousness that occurred due to the childish, obstructionist, hateful phobic agenda advanced by a certain group known locally as the Castrop Bonservatives or some such (we’re not sure of their exact name because we just don’t care about them). They caused all kinds of grief and came very close to forcing the 2022 drag show to be cancelled. But Bastrop Pride prevailed!
Thankfully, this year apparently the adults were in charge and the planning stages of the drag show went off comparatively without a hitch as far as any of us are aware. We have heard that certain members of the Bastrop City Council were very helpful in guiding the process to allow for the correct permits and so forth to smooth the way.
Hats off to the Bastrop Beer Co. for supporting the event and welcoming attendees before and after the drag show Friday as well as the evening street event on Saturday. And special props to the wonderful Vibe Tribe for offering their back yard space for the show. Have you visited this shop yet? Loads of wonderful handmade arts and crafts by local artists. In other words, it’s perfect for any gift-giving opportunities that may present themselves.
But back to the drag show.
It could not have been a more perfect June evening. Even Mother Nature lent a hand with a pleasant breeze, a (mostly) full moon, and some fireflies to make the evening complete. If you attended, you probably know that the event was sold out. You heard a wonderful anecdote from the emcee, Eva Inez, about how welcoming and accepted she felt attending school in the BISD. You were shocked and amazed by the death-defying acrobatics of Superman and Veronica Valentine (the latter in spike boots, no less!) And if you weren’t wiping a tear during Miss Kitty Litter’s numbers, you must be made of stone.
The Saturday evening event on Main Street and the Sunday afternoon event at Fisherman’s Park were equally enjoyable. We encourage you to support our friends at Bastrop Pride. You can visit their Facebook page and connect with them if you are interested in joining or volunteering or donating. What a great group. We’re proud to know them.
A couple of post scripts for Pride Month:

We know you have been on pins and needles, wondering how our Bunco event went last week. It was a blast! Thanks to the MacLeods for being the best Bunco hosts ever in the history of Bunco. Things we learned while playing Bunco:
Put Sheri and Ruth at the same table, then stand back and let the games begin.
There is such thing as a kid’s table, even when it’s not Thanksgiving.
Being able to use your fingers to keep score (instead of pencil and paper) is right up there with patting your tummy while simultaneously rubbing your head. Some of us just can’t do it.
Speaking of our signature fun monthly events with like-minded folk, we have decided what we will be doing for June. It involves a party game for horrible people. Stay tuned for details.
CODA is also on Facebook. We would love to see you there as well.
Love this!
